The Alentejo & the Vine
The Alentjo is a Portugal region covering much of the southern half of the country originally the name , Além - Tejo , literally means "beyond the Tagus ".
This region is characterized by the mixture of Roman and Arabic cultures as well as the latest evidence of Christianity.
North - east are the typical towns of Castle Road , famous for its tapestries.
Going south , the landscape becomes more arid. Around Evora, one of the most beautiful cities of Portugal , declared World Heritage by UNESCO , one must visit the marble quarries and Arraiolos , known for his famous hand-woven carpets .
Alvito , Beja, is an ancient Roman city that became a Muslim cultural center , Moura, Serpa and Mértola are places worth visiting . South -west , the coastline attracts visitors with its beautiful beaches , some of which still wild . The Alentejo is a region known for its rural and ecological tourism.
The Alentejo is not really a wine region , but countless small viticulture areas together, these territories s'parpillent along the Spanish border in the east and southeast of Lisbon.

The Alentejo covers a relatively large area of the country where one manufactures olive oil, there is always olive trees, in vineyards as in Tuscany .
