Spain and viticulture
Spain and viticulture
Subject to the influences of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean , provincial boundaries are defined by the different climatic influences
Apart from some wet mountain areas , low rainfall and lack of water is a problem in much of Spain. Forest fires are a problem ,for all the forests of the Iberian Peninsula
The Mediterranean climate is characterized by hot and dry summers , it is dominant in the peninsula, with two great shades : Mediterranean climate types (climate Csa ) , found in the southern part of the country, in the north- west of the country , with less scorching summers because of the proximity to the ocean
The area of Spanish vineyard surface of ectares 1.2 million , more than the French and Italian vineyards , although Spain produces less wine
This difference in performance is partly due to the high proportion of wines of Spanish origin name
Spain produces less than table wines and wines of countries as France and Italy
The majority of Spanish wines come from Catalonia, Valencia and the English Channel , but other regions such as La Rioja, Aragon , the Levant and Andalusia produce quality wines in much lower volumes , lower the yields s ' as explained by the very hot and dry climate of southern Spain .
The vines are pruned short to survive in extreme climates, give only a few bunches per vine
