The canton of Valais & Wines

The canton of Valais ( VS - German Kanton Wallis ) is a canton of Switzerland in the south of the country.

It is a sovereign canton in the Swiss Confederation since 1815 , it is Catholic tradition and as the capital city of Zion , the largest city of the canton with 30 363 inhabitants followed by Monthey, Sierre and Martigny with over 15,000 in habitants, according to the Valais chiffres2010 . The township is bilingual: French and German are the official languages .

The Valais is historically the former " Pennine Valley " ( Vallis Poenina ) , name the Romans gave to the region. Thereafter, in the sixth century, it will be designated as the pagus Vallensis ( "land of the Valley ") or simply Vallensis .

The Valais is characterized by a great variety of soils, exhibitions , climates, in a word, terroir . It is therefore not surprising that many varieties have ideal conditions for their development

. The canton of Valais with its 5259 hectares of vineyards, has the largest vineyard de Suisse. Most of the vineyards are planted on the right bank of the Rhone Valley in an area of 120 km long that extends from Martigny to Leuk. Over 50 cépages différents are grown at an altitude ranging from 450 to 800 meters, with the exception of vineyards Visperterminen located more than 1000 meters. The hard work of its growers, combined with a favorable microclimate and a restrictive cantonal legislation, allow Valais wines to be regularly distinguished in major international competitions .

Indigenous varieties ( Amigne , Arvine Cornalin Humagne and Rèze ) saw their culture gradually replaced by other , more appropriate to their time . But thanks to the work of saving some winemakers faithful to tradition , most of these varieties have survived and are currently , relatively speaking , in expansion.

If the so-called traditional varieties ( Chardonnay, Red Humagne , Marsanne , Pinot Gris , Savagnin Blanc, Sylvaner and Syrah ) are present in many wine regions of the world , however, they acquire in Valais special and attractive identity.

It thus represents the hallmark of Valais , to the point of being recognized in particular by the grape variety on the label (although rather some other regions take up the name of a domain or a brand) .

In order to preserve the diversity and wine growers offer healthy plants and high quality , the State of Valais established there about 20 years , an innovative program . This is , for many varieties to collect in certain exceptional vineyards (sometimes old ! ) Plant material and allow to nursery to ensure sustainability. In contrast to the clonal selection - that is to plant a vine with any one individual multiplied almost to infinity, which certainly makes the vine

more consistent but also more vulnerable - this approach ( mass selection ) , named " Valais Selection " allows new plants to keep the expensive variety to life and produce wines

The Valais climate is continental with strong influence of the Alps. Summer is hot and dry ( cacti grow at the foot of the hill deValère ) and chilly winter snow falling almost every year until plain. The annual sunshine is more than 2000 hours, while the total rainfall is around 700 mm . The presence in the fall of Foehn , a warm wind , gives the Valais a microclimate conducive to late maturing varieties

Lower Valais to Fully characterized by poor soils of limestone , where granites and gneiss dominent . Then , up the Rhone valley from Saillon , limestone becomes dominant . The vineyards surrounding Zion consists of areas with white mica schist , which , on the surface , reflect sunlight . Taking direction from the Upper Valais Sion , there is a stony soil and limestone. The soils of the vineyards are richer plain sandstone and marl , as provided by the sediments of the Rhone, those slopes .
