Marche ( Italian Marche [ marke ] ) is a region of central Italy , which has 1.56 million inhabitants in 9366 km2.

The region as capital Ancona ( Picenum ) the Romans annexed the third century BC . J. C.The Greeks are then limited to the Ancona foundation in the fourth century BC. AD and established trade links with only the first . Marches were invaded by the Gallic tribes Senones ( who founded Senigallia now twinned with direction ) . They were driven out by the Romans (remains particularly Fano and Ancona ) with the help of Picéniens they defeated them in turn to 300 BC

The region is located in the center of Italy along the Adriatic, between Romagna in Northern Umbria and Tuscany to the west and south Abruzzo . It is bordered by the ridge of the Apennines in the West : the altitude it ranges from 1702 m Monte Catria Centre - North 2472 m in Sibillini Mountains south to Monte Vettore . The landscape consists of 31% to 69% of mountains and hills. Gentle hills pierced by some coastal rivers parallel , perpendicular to the coast and to just over 100 km in length ( Foglia , Metaurus , ESINO , Misa , Chienti , Tronto ... ) just dive straight into the sea, Stendhal was particularly impressed by this relief without any of the plain.

Verdicchio is the ambassador of Marche wines . The DOC Castelli di Jesi is the birthplace of Verdicchio . Producers have recently created a new image of Verdicchio is now a white wine with a specific character. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico is considered the first Italian wine to serve to accompany the fish. Some producers make wines that develop depth and complexity so impressive with age that Verdicchio is increasingly often ranked among the finest white grape in Italy .

they also make sparkling wine by fermentation in sealed tanks and also by the more traditional method of secondary fermentation in the bottle. The recent ESINO DOC produces both white and red , usually quite fresh and fruity . Other wines from the region , including Bianchello del Metauro and Falerio dei Colli Ascolani are usually mild and slightly tangy and goes very well with seafood

The red wines of Marches are based primarily on Sangiovese and Montepulciano, sometimes mixed. The largest in volume is Rosso Piceno, dominated by Sangiovese . The Rosso Conero, dominated by Montepulciano, is even more appreciated. The Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno are generally developed to be enjoyed in two to four years , while they are still fresh and round .

The northern part of the region is the area DOC Colli Pesaresi where the main wine is a Sangiovese that has a fairly strong resemblance to the wines of the same grape from the nearby Romagna. Although it focuses mainly on local varieties , recent results with external varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon were very promising in the temperate hills of the Marche .
